Patient Focused Funding (PFF) is a new way to pay for some elective surgeries in Alberta based on the type and volume of work that is done. Hospitals and health service providers, like Alberta Health Services and Covenant Health, will now get some of their funding based on how many patients they treat, what kind of care they give, and how complex that care is. This is different from the previous funding model which gave service providers a set amount of money each year to provide care.
In Alberta, PFF is meant to make the cost of care clearer by linking a portion of public funding more closely to the care people receive, while still keeping care safe and high quality.
PFF will start in steps. First, it will include four common surgeries:
With this system, money follows patient care and is designed to contribute to timely care and value for the money the province spends.
