Accreditation

Overview

Accreditation is required for all health care providers in Alberta. It helps make sure patients receive safe, high-quality care, no matter where they are treated. The standards used in accreditation are based on the best available evidence and proven practices. They are designed to reduce risk, improve consistency, and support better outcomes for patients and families.

Accreditation is more than a checklist. It is a regular opportunity for health care teams to step back and look at how they are doing. It helps identify what is working well, where there may be gaps, and what can be improved. This process supports a culture of learning and continuous improvement across the health system.

Acute Care Alberta (ACA) plays an important role in overseeing acute care services across the province. ACA reviews information from independent reports by Accreditation Canada to understand how service providers are performing. This helps identify common challenges, highlight areas of strength, and ensure clear expectations are being met.

By comparing performance against clear, objective standards, ACA can better understand where improvements are needed and where progress is being made. This work helps strengthen care across the system and supports better, safer care for all Albertans.
